Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

When I finally made it to the last 5 miles of my 155 mile hike, the Colorado trail crossed over the Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad tracks. I decided this would be a good spot to stop for some lunch before making one last big climb to Molas Pass, after a good break I put the pack back on one last time and started making my way down the tracks to meet up with the trail. Around that same time I heard the old Narrow Gauge Railroad train heading up the tracks, I decided to hang out for a minute and soon captured this shot of the train coming around the corner....

Back into Tree line on Colorado Trail

Spending a good week hiking above tree line it felt great to get back to lower elevation, this photograph which was taken during the morning hours showed the view along the Colorado Trail heading towards Silverton, CO. I had a feeling this section of the Colorado Trail was going to be the highlight of the trip, as I made my way down the canyon the views seem to only get better with every mile. http://www.mjbauerphotography.net/colorado-gallery-1/

Sunset over Snowy Mesa

Sunset over Snowy Mesa

When crossing the Snowy Mesa in Southwest Colorado the storm clouds finally started to break up, it didn’t take long for the setting sun to light up the clouds off in the distance. Since I was well above tree line at 12,552 ft I decided to make this base camp for the night, this location turned out to be a chilly place to camp for the night, since I woke up to frost and a frozen tent the following morning. http://www.mjbauerphotography.net/colorado-gallery-1/

Hiking through Weminuche Wilderness

Spending a good hour hiking though one of the worst storms I’ve been in awhile the sky finally broke, it didn’t take long for the sun to come back out and the wind to die down. When I made it to this location at a high alpine lake I decided to take a well earned break, finding a good rock to sit down on and pulling off the pack I could not have picked a better place to relax under the warm sun in the Weminuche Wilderness. http://www.mjbauerphotography.net/colorado-gallery-1/

Carson Peak Evening Sun

Carson Peak Evening Sun

After a good rest day in the small town of Lake City, CO the following day I was able to hike a good 24 miles with a loaded down 45 pound pack, that evening after crossing over two summits I made it to this location and called it a day. I wasted no time setting up camp and making a well earned dinner, around that time the evening light started to hit Carson Peak off in the distance. I grabbed the camera and pulled off this photograph right before the light went away, not a bad view from camp in the San Juan Mountains on this evening! http://www.mjbauerphotography.net/colorado-gallery-1/

Sunset over the Snow Mesa

Sunset over the Snow Mesa

After a good long hike I finally found a small lake to set up camp for the night, this area called Snow Mesa located in Southwest Colorado had no trees since I was camping at 12,310 ft. Once I finished setting everything up and grabbing a bite to eat, I decided to hike up the ridge line to capture the sunset. It didn’t take long before the sky blew up to the West which made for a nice ending to one pretty amazing day. http://www.mjbauerphotography.net/colorado-gallery-1/

Along the Colorado Trail

Along the Colorado Trail

After doing a full day vehicle shuttle I finally set off hiking the Colorado Trail from Monarch Pass, with only a hour before sunset I decided to hike about a mile in and found a good place to set up camp. After getting everything ready for the night, I made a short walk over to a good view point where the sun started to break out of the clouds, looking North from where I was standing a beam of light started to light up the Collegiate Mountain Range located in Central Colorado. This nice evening was short lived as another thunderstorm was making it way towards...

Outside of Maroon Bells Wilderness

  • July 24, 2017

When exploring just outside of the Maroon Bells Wilderness we came upon this small waterfall, deciding this would be a good spot to stop for a break I pulled out the camera to take a couple of photographs. The small waterfall was running at a good rate since a pretty good thunderstorm had just past through the area, with the sun finally breaking out of the clouds, this turned out to be a pretty sweet afternoon to be outdoors and away from the rat race. http://www.mjbauerphotography.net/colorado-gallery-1/

Camping Under the Milky Way

Camping Under the Milky Way

Long after sunset the campfire was starting to die down, overhead I noticed the milky way shining bright so I set up the camera for some night photography. Being so far away from any city or town lights I felt like I could see every star in the sky, this turned out to be one very relaxing night while camping in a remote section of the Colorado Rockies. http://www.mjbauerphotography.net/colorado-gallery-1/
